Digital Marketing Basics – Basic marketing techniques to grow your business | Modern Marketing Ep 7

Digital marketing (aka online marketing or sometimes even internet marketing) can be tricky, especially without a solid digital marketing strategy. Which is why on this episode we’re talking about the ever important, digital marketing basics, basic marketing techniques to grow your business.

Without a solid foundation rooted in digital marketing strategy all the marketing tools & tips to grow your business just won’t work.

Whether it’s social media, SEO, email marketing, or online advertising, the way to make your digital marketing campaigns truly effective is to first start with a solid foundation rooted in the fundamentals.

A little bit of marketing research done ahead of time can literally save you thousands (for big campaigns even hundreds of thousands) of dollars and days, weeks, months, even years of your precious time.

So what exactly are the basic digital marketing strategies I’m talking about?

STEP 1: Define your target market

This step really can’t be overstated. In fact, it really doesn’t matter whether we’re talking traditional or digital marketing, the same concept applies in that you NEED to first identify who it is you’re trying to reach. This is because only from here can you decide what to say, how to say it, and where to say it. The better you understand your target market and their dreams and fears the better and more effective your marketing will be.

Step 2: Use native content

If you want to look like an amateur entrepreneur then simply create a piece of content and blast it out across all 15 different social media networks you use. Sure, there’s a time and a place for syndicating and sharing content (we’re all busy and it saves a lot of time when done right) but you also want to be respectful of the platforms, and more importantly, of the viewers and users of that platform. So when you can, try to make your content looks like it was made for the channel, and that it belongs there.

Step 3: Track everything

Measure your marketing metrics! The first step here is to know your KPI’s or key performance indicators so you can track what’s working and what’s not. From there, start slow, and focus on just 1 or 2 key things and you’ll quickly be able to tell if your marketing is working (in which case you should scale it up!) or not working (in which case you may want to tweak or delete it)

Whether you’re doing it on your own or working with an agency, knowing a thing or two about the basics is always a good plan!

Many of you out there know that I have a lot of naysayers. Some of you like me, some of you don’t like me yourselves, and that’s okay. It’s mainly because I’ve done some aggressive marketing tactics in the past.

I’m Neil Patel and today, I’m gonna share with you three bold marketing tactics that have made me millions. Have you guys ever seen the Who is Neil Patel campaign?

0:20 Controversial Digital Marketing Campaign #1:
Yes, most of you know it because in many cases, there was a lot of half-dressed girls in it. I didn’t pay half dressed girls, I paid a lot of body builders, makeup artists, I even paid one buff guy, and he put the name Neil Patel on his pecks, and he was like flexing like this, so my name kept bouncing up and down.

If I had to take it back, yeah, I probably wouldn’t do it anymore. I wasn’t trying to degrade women, I learned entrepreneurship from my mom, and I did apologize to the community for doing that but that campaign, I did it more so to get my brand out there, get the Google searches so that way I can rank higher on Google.

In the long run, it ended up working and what I found out is that campaign led to a lot of business deals that did make me millions of dollars.

Now what you’ll find from this is you won’t get a ton of direct sales, you’ll get a lot of search visitors. They may not be sticky, but in general, your brand will get out there.

The second tactic I have for you is infographics. When I first started doing infographics, especially on the Kissmetrics website no one else was doing them. People were like, “Infographics takes too much time, “design time, energy, why would you do it? “There’s no text; Google likes ranking text.”

But by creating beautiful design infographics, I was spending $500 to $1000 per graphic and people were like, “You’re crazy, these articles “and infographics aren’t gonna rank for anything.” Sure, I was putting a paragraph above the infographic, maybe a paragraph below but you know what? Those infographics generated thousands and thousands of links.

4:10 Controversial Digital Marketing Campaign #3:
The third tactic I have for you is giving away everything for free. If you see a popular competitor who’s charging for stuff, just give away stuff for free. For example, if you go to keywordtool.io and you want to do keyword research, what do you have to do? Yeah, you can use the tool for free but to get CPC data, to get more keywords, you have to pay for it.

What did I do? I bought Ubersuggest for a bit more than $100,000, I merged it into neilpatel.com, I added all their paid features, I released it for free, and you know what? Now, you don’t have to pay for their tool. I gave it away all for free. My traffic on that Ubersuggest section on my site compared to when I bought it has grown by over 50%. All I did was one simple thing; I gave away other people’s paid features fully for free. No pricing plans, no login required, unlimited usage for free.

If you want to do well, you don’t have to copy my tactics, just get creative, do some of these crazy things and the more crazier they are, the better off you are. Again, as I learned on early in my career, don’t go too crazy and you don’t want people to think you’re a sexist or anything like that. Make sure you respect people. I learned the hard way so make sure you don’t run into the same issues that I ran into.

Digital marketing campaigns when properly designed and managed lead to increased brand awareness, better quality leads, and more sales.

That’s why in part 1 of this two part series I’ve listed 7 strategies to dramatically increase your digital marketing campaigns effectiveness and return on investment.

1. Understand changing media consumption. I’ve found that this is the single most important element in designed and executing a high performing digital marketing campaign.

Are you aware of exactly how your target market is consuming their information?

No other strategy or tactic will matter if you’re barking up the wrong tree. The message simply doesn’t matter if it isn’t being heard by your target market.

2. Consumer Behavior. It’s important to design your digital marketing campaign around proven customer behaviour patterns and decision making criteria.

While many factors are different in the online arena, the human brain is the same, and as Jeff Walker puts it, so are the mental triggers that create action. Be sure to incorporate at least one of the following (and ideally more) into every digital marketing campaign you run:

Authority, reciprocity, trust, anticipation, likeability, events and rituals, community, scarcity, and social proof.

3. Facts Sell. While storytelling is an integral part of most marketing campaigns (and is often touted as the be all and end all) at the end of the day facts and statistics can often perform better in regards to proving expertise, and increasing conversions.

Leverage and test both factual and emotional advertising in your marketing campaigns, and try to find a way to use relevant and authoritative references.

4. Images Are 80%. The success or failure of your digital marketing campaign largely comes down to the images you decide to use. The most important tip in choosing an image is first making sure it catches your prospects attention, and next making sure it’s relevant.

Irrelevant ads may get clicks, but they rarely get conversions. Stock images can also be effective, but they are most effective when customized and optimized for your audience.

5. Split Testing. Perhaps one of the greatest advantages of digital marketing is the ability to test one campaign against another in order to quickly cut lower performing ads, and scale up higher performing ones.

Split testing should be done in stages, starting with your images, followed by your headline, and finally your body copywriting. The end result is a higher performing and more cost effective ad.

6. Respect Attention Spans. Attention spans have been getting shorter year after year, and nowhere is this more evident than online. This isn’t a bad thing however, as the odds are good that your competitors are failing to recognize and capitalize on this, which leaves the door open for you to create eye-catching and engaging ads.
