2018 is going to be an exciting year.

The analysis on how much money we’re spending to generate the traffic and here’s what’s crazy, most people don’t realize this, we generate, let’s say a million visitors a month on Neil Patel.

Do you know what the cost to get there is with video, production, podcasting, blogging, promotion, ads, link building?

$110,000 a month.

That’s what it averaged out to for 2017.

Here are my marketing strategies for 2018.

I just bought a blog in the marketing space for a half a million bucks.

They get a million visitors a month, and it’s cheaper to spend money acquiring people who already have the traffic.

So in 2017, I bought Uber Suggest, I think it was around 140 grand.

They had very little traffic.

I 381 redirected the site, traffic increased and guess what happened?

Nothing.

I hoped that my traffic would go through the roof, but nothing happened.

Uber Suggest was a good acquisition and what I ended up learning from that is, who cares about links?

Don’t buy anything for the links.

Buy it purely based off of traffic and just pay a simple metric.

If Uber Suggest has roughly 200,000 visitors per month, I paid a hundred and something; I would have paid 200 grand, the money didn’t matter.

For a blog that I just spent half a million on, their traffic ranges.

On a horrible month, they’ll get around 800,000 uniques.

In a perfect month, they’ll get around, like, 1.2, 1.3 million uniques, and all I’m doing right now is buying as many blogs as possible.

My marketing strategy for 2018 is to buy blogs based on of traffic.

I look at the top posts that they have and how qualified their visitors are and determine if I can successfully monetize their content.

I don’t even care if they have revenue.

If they don’t have revenue, even better.

The problem with Search Engine Journal is that they have conferences, they have advertising, and they have contracts for all of it.

I don’t care for any of that.

I just want the traffic.

So when you buy all these people for traffic and then you put it into your monetization flow, you can quickly figure out, what is this worth?

If I can’t make my money back in less than 12 months, I will not buy it.

The other marketing strategy that I use when I’m buying these sites is to look for blogs that aren’t monetized well.

The blog that I ended up buying for half a million bucks, they’re not even making three grand a month.

If you’re not even making three grand a month, that’s a good deal, right?

They’re like; you’re going to give me half a million dollars for this?

No problem.

Another creative marketing strategy I’m doing right now, is trying to buy a really popular marketing tool.

I don’t want to pay them all the money they’re asking for because they want well into the millions, and it isn’t worth it.

But, I’m trying to work out a deal where I give them X amount of money up front, let’s say a million dollars, and then give them a hundred thousand a month over X amount of months or a hundred thousand a year over X amount of years.

When I see inefficiencies in sites, I figure I can purchase them and double the revenue because they aren’t optimized for traffic or conversions.

So buy it for what it’s worth, optimize it, and then use the profits to pay them out continually.

That way you’re not using all of your money and the business is paying, you may have spent a bit more money, but personally, you don’t have to spend as much money, and that’s my marketing strategy for 2018.

My goal is to spend at least $5 million acquiring businesses purely based on their traffic.

There are a whole host of different strategies that you want to do as a business owner or entrepreneur when it comes to marketing online vs. offline.

Offline strategies you want to continue to embrace (or bring back into play immediately) if I were you are:

– Direct mail
– Phone calling
– Live event networking and speaking
– And for some businesses – door to door or drop by (yes!)

The people making a ton of money online are few and far between, you just think there are a lot of them because you see them over and over again on social media but really, it’s a very slim percentage of the small business population. That doesn’t mean you can’t make a ton of money online, you can; if you learn from those people how to do it and you follow their system to a T, most don’t.

Offline marketing, in my opinion, is easier to do AND it produces FASTER and more CONSISTENT results.

#1: You don’t always know what’s happening with your competitor’s business

For example, just because they have a similar product to yours you don’t necessarily know why people prefer their product over yours. Online marketing is really tricky this way.

There could be something special about it, or they could have been in the marketplace so much longer that they build up so much brand credibility that they can get away with pretty much murder while you can’t, right?

#2: People make their changes based on opinions.

You don’t want to make changes based on opinions. You want to make changes based off of facts. A lot of times, your competitors are doing changes to their websites just because they feel like they want to do those changes. They have that gut feeling that this is going to work for them. Well, gut feelings don’t necessarily create multiple million dollar companies or billion dollar organizations. Data does. You want to use data to make changes on your website. That’s why I use CrazyEgg whenever I make changes on my website. I’m continually using it to run split tests. If I just copy someone it’s not necessarily going to work for me. I got to run tests to see what works for my audience.

#3: You’re different than your competition.

You need your own unique selling proposition especially with social media marketing. If someone’s already bigger than you copying them won’t make you bigger than them. You gotta be different, and by being different you need to create a unique selling proposition.

So, for example, if they’re a really big corporation, like I used to have a agency when I was younger and I used to compete with iProspect. iProspect would say, hey, we work with big brands like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s. Well, you know, a lot of people would come to me and be like, Neil, why should we hire you instead of iProspect? It shows in their job posting that hey, you get to work on accounts like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s. Well, on the flip side, if you work with me, you’re ging to talk with me.

You get that personalized experience, right? That was my unique selling proposition. I’d be like, “if you call me, you know I’m going to be picking up, and I’m going to be the one helping you”. I’m going to be the one who’s held responsible for your results, and they like that. I put myself in a different position than my competitors.

Did I ever beat them in size? No, but by making myself different and standing out I was able to grow my business much faster.

THE BUSINESS PLAN EVERY DIGITAL MARKETING AGENCY NEEDS | AGENCY PLAYBOOK

In this video, I’m giving you the 8 components of the business plan every digital marketing agency needs in order to be successful. So many of us are in the agency business by accident. But, success doesn’t happen by accident and that’s why you need a plan.

I get it. At first you knew how to do something cool and people were willing to pay you for it. Then before you knew it, you became an agency. So whether you’re just starting out or got years of experience under your belt, it’s never too late to develop a business plan.

Here’s the 8 Systems every Digital Marketing Agency needs:

1. CLARITY: Where is your agency now and where do you want it to go? You can’t get where you’re going unless you’re very clear on the destination.

2. POSITIONING: How can you position your agency as “THE Choice” rather than just “A Choice”?

3. OFFERING: What do your ideal clients need? Hint: it’s not always what you want them to need 🙂 But, what does your service offering ladder look like and how can you use it to build trust and land the bigger projects or retainers?

4. PROSPECTING: With the right positioning and offering, how can you find the right prospects? I believe every agency should have a 3-channel approach to prospecting: inbound, outbound and partnerships. That way, if one or two of those channels becomes weak you still have others to fall back on.

5. SALES: What will be your process for converting all your prospects into clients? Are you talking to only the right prospects and not wasting time on the wrong ones? Is there a qualification process, proposal process and follow-up process?

6. DELIVERY: This is an area that is often overlooked but so important to success. What is the onboarding strategy? What is the plan for continuous follow-up and how can you ensure you don’t lose money through scope creep?

7. OPERATIONS: What is the structure of your team and how does your agency’s org chart look? As you grow, how will the org chart continue to develop and where do the layers of authority and responsibility lie?

8. LEADERSHIP: What are the roles of the leadership team and how involved in the owner in daily operations? What KPI’s are important and how often do you measure them against your goals? How will you develop your agency’s brand and continue to stand out?
